[Maidian.com] Officials from the China National Tourism Administration told reporters on Tuesday that since the 10th anniversary of the return of Macao, more than 84.19 million tourists have visited the mainland. In the past ten years, mainland tourists have brought more than A$260 billion in tourism revenue to Macau (excluding gaming revenue).

Officials said that in 2003, the central government expanded tourism to open to Australia, and successively introduced nine measures including investment tourism facilities, travel agency establishment, operation of tourism business, and multi-destination. These measures were implemented in Macao's tourism industry. The development of the service industry has played a positive role.

Just as the tourism industry in Macau enjoyed the warming of tourism, the sudden outbreak of SARS caused the tourism industry to be hit hard. The central government strongly supported the SAR government and did its utmost to help Macao overcome the SARS epidemic. It has successively issued a number of policies and measures to support the Hong Kong and Macao economy, including the "Mainland and Macao Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement". In the relevant cities in the Mainland, mainland residents are allowed to travel to Hong Kong and Macao. Today, there are forty-nine open “individual travel” cities in the Mainland.

According to the relevant statistics of Macao, from 2003 to October 2009, the total number of “individual tour” visitors to the Mainland reached 33.13 million. In the first ten months of 2009, tourists who traveled to Macau on a “personal tour” accounted for 44% of mainland visitors to Australia this year. Mainland residents have become Hong Kong and Macao's main source of tourists and have always maintained the status of Macau's largest source market.

At the same time, Macao is also the most important driving force for the development of inbound tourism in the Mainland and the second largest source of inbound tourists in the Mainland. In the past ten years, the number of Macao visitors to the mainland has reached more than 200 million. (China News Network)
